Philip and Sarah Barber of Petane Station in the Esk Valley district of Hawke’s Bay are rapidly establishing themselves as serious producers of wine, especially with the aromatic varieties. Starting by purchasing an established block of vines they have developed their holdings to 8 ha in 5 blocks, with Pinot Gris as the predominant variety. There are smaller amounts of Gewürztraminer, Viognier and Chardonnay, and fruit for red wine is sourced from outside the area. The Barbers personally tend to the viticulture and have their wine made at the Askerne facility under the watchful eye of the very experienced Ant Mackenzie. The wines have proven very successful in judgings and reviews. Here, I review the new 2015 Viognier, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer releases.
