Petane Viognier 2018
With a nose of apricots, orange blossom, nutty oak and North African spice, this is a full-bodied wine with thick, dense oily textures and a punchy underlying vitality. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is rich and luscious with creamy barrel-fermented elements. Serve with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 5 years.
Sheep graze the entire vineyard for a few months after harvest, this controls the grasses and weeds, with the added bonus of natural fertiliser. After some heavy winter pruning and a cooler than average flowering, a light crop was ensured; this resulted in smaller than normal bunches and berries and a concentration of flavours. Minimal leaf plucking was carried out to maximise photosynthesis and carbohydrate production to enhance ripening.
Handpicked from our Tracks block, made up of two very longs rows of clone 642 that curve with the Napier Wairoa rail line. Only two barrels resulted from the ultra-low cropped vines. After whole bunch pressing the juice went straight into seasoned French Oak barrels for ferment. After fermentation was complete the wine had fortnightly barrel stirring to impart some yeast complexity, and a further 8 months barrel aging on less before bottling.
