Petane Wines Syrah 2018
Dark deep ruby-red colour with joyous youthful purple hues. The nose is ballerina elegant, with intense and penetrating tightly bound aromas of black current, black pepper, bay leaf and lifted violet florals with unfolding nuances of liquorice and dried herbs. The palate has firm but fine grained tannins and vibrant acidity enhancing the fruit aromatics and delivering richness. Juicy, perfectly balanced, smooth and velvety, this Syrah is drinking beautifully now and will age gracefully for another 4-5 years.
Hot and dry growing conditions from early spring until late summer 2018 meant a near perfect Hawke's Bay red grape vintage. Fruit was sourced from the Askerne vineyard in the Te Mata, Havelock North district and from the Lyons vineyard in Bridge Pa.
Hand picked in mid-April then de-stemmed with 3% whole cluster Viognier added to the open top vats, the juice was cold soaked for 7 days to enhance colour, tannin and maximise flavour from the beautiful skins and seeds. Once pressed the juice was pumped into French oak barrels (20% new) to finish off primary ferment, evolve and then in its own time naturally under-go malolactic fermentation. Good things take time and 12 months later the wine was bottled, with 130 cases made.
