Petane Chardonnay 2019
The Drinking
Bright straw in colour 100% barrel fermented with indigenous vineyard yeast. Yellow and white summer stone fruit and toasted macadamia nut.
The Growing
This was a hot super dry vintage with barely any rain during late summer, dry farming practices since planting day, along with being herbicide free under vine, controlled by mowing no tillage this has encouraged the vine roots to grow deep into the sandy Esk River loam in search for water and minerals, giving a more expressive wine with highly flavoured smaller berries. 60/40 mix of two clones; 548 and 95 this wine will only improve with careful cellaring for another 10 years +
The Making
Handpicked and WBP the juice was settled over night then transferred into a mix of 20% new and seasoned French barriques and hogsheads, 100% indigenous vineyard yeast ferment. Post primary barrel stirring commenced every 3-4 weeks, to keep the yeast in suspension adding a layer of complexity and impart some yeasty goodness. Barrel aged on yeast lee for 10 months. We have malolactic fermentation taken place naturally, minimal sulphur only added prior to bottling.
